In this video you can listen to a very famous song in Milanese (Oh mia bela Madunina/Oh my beautiful little Madonna). The 'little Madonna' is the golden statue of the Virgin standing on the highest steeple of the Duomo Cathedral in Milan, dominating the whole city from that position. The song is considered to be the anthem of the city. If you listen to it, you will realise how the dialect differs from standard Italian and its sounds are a mixture between Italian and French. As always you can find the lyrics and a translation posted as a comment.

Milanese:
ReplyDeleteA diesen la canzon la nass a Napuli
e francament g'han minga tutti i tort
Surriento, Margellina tucc'i popoli
i avran cantà on milion de volt.
Mi speri che se offendera nissun
se parlom un cicin anca de num.
They say singing was born in Naples
and frankly they are not wrong
Sorrento, Margellina, in every country
people have sung of them a million times
I hope that nobody is offended
if we talk a little bit about us too...
Oh mia bela Madunina che te brillet de lontan
tuta d'ora e piscinina, ti te dominet Milan
sota a ti se viv la vita, se sta mai coi man in man
canten tucc "lontan de Napoli se moeur"
ma po' i vegnen chi a Milan.
Oh my beautiful little Madonna, that shines from far above
all golden and tiny, you dominate Milan
under you people live their lives, they are never idle
they all sing 'far away from Naples you die', but then they come to Milan
Ades ghè la canzon de Roma magica
de Nina er Cupolone e Rugantin
se sbaten in del Tever, roba tragica
esageren, me par on cicinin.
Sperem che vegna minga la mania
de metes a cantà "Malano mia!".
Now there is a song about magic Rome
about Nina, the big Dome and Rugantino, they end up in the Tevere , a tragic thing, I think they exaggerate a little bit. Let's hope they don't come up with the idea to start singing 'My Milan'
Oh mia bela Madunina che te brillet de lontan
tuta d'ora e piscinina, ti te dominet Milan
sota a ti se viv la vita, se sta mai coi man in man
canten tucc "lontan de Napoli se moeur"
ma po' i vegnen chi a Milan.
Sì, vegnì senza paura
num ve songaremm la man
tutt el mond a l`è paes, e semm d`accòrd,
ma Milan, l`è on gran Milan!
Yes, come with no fear
we will reach out to you
people are the same everywhere you go, we agree, but Milan is great!
