Past participle of 'essere'

In Italian stato is both the past participle of the verb 'to be' (essere) and of the verb 'to stay (stare). It also takes the auxiliary 'essere' when it is used in the past. So, if you want to say 'I was/stayed at home yesterday'you will have to say 'Sono stato a casa ieri'. Remember that 'stato', being a participle requiring 'essere', must agree in gender and number with the subject of the sentence.
